Holiday prep was shortened this year due to a late Thanksgiving.
How does Thanksgiving suddenly land on the last Thursday in November?
I’ll tell you how. According to Delaware Online,
“The delay started on February 29, when we squeezed that extra day into the calendar. The combination of Leap Year and Halloween being on a Thursday set the dates to align so that Thanksgiving would be on the latest possible day, Nov. 28. This won’t happen again until 2030.”
Relieved to hear this because as busy and rushy as the holiday season usually is, this year it felt more so.
But enough about all of that. I’m here for you.
Here to say I hope the last few days of this busy, rushy season gives you joy.
If not joy then some bit of happiness. I find that a Linzer cookie filled with raspberry jam restores me to my better self.
I wish you all your favorite songs, movies, treats, and traditions.
I hope the time you spend with your people reminds you, even in those moments that test our patience, that as different as we are, we mostly want the same things.
To be accepted and loved. To be safe.
This year may test us more so than in years past but we’re making memories none the less. May your moments be filled with many you will love to relive.
A few years ago I shared a quote that I still love and go to at times when I’m wrestling my ego over one small thing or another. “But you said you’d be ready by 3 and it’s now 3:15!”
Like that.
It’s about grace. Not the Christian concept. The good will kind of concept. The reminder that perhaps there’s room for me to let go and really see the other person, not the disagreement.
“Grace is love that seeks you out when you have nothing to give in return. Grace is love coming at you that has nothing to do with you.” Paul Zahl
My final wish for all of you, no matter what your holiday looks like, or even whether you celebrate at this time of year, is that you give and make the most of, the grace that is always here.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays,
Greg
